How does it feel to spend a day at the Rolex Paris Masters? What is the atmosphere like? What do you get to see?

We take a look back at the Rolex Paris Masters experience, with feedback straight from the spectators’ mouths!

What do you see?

As he leaves court 2, Édouard tells us, “What I really liked was watching a match between two up-and-coming young players followed by a duel between two of tennis’ greatest champions, all on the same afternoon.”

This week, the Rolex Paris Masters has given tennis fans a taste of the very best that sport has to offer. One of the most hotly-anticipated matches is Sunday’s final between Karen Khachanov, a leader of the Next Gen, and Novak Djokovic, an illustrious champion who will soon regain his world number one crown. Almost all of the world’s top players were in the running: from the “pretenders to the throne” – Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Jack Sock, Denis Shapovalov, Karen Khashanov, et al. – to all but one of the members of the “Big Four” – Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic – plus Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Benoit Paire and Marin Cilic.

On Saturday, a clash of the titans took place on Centre Court in the AccorHotels Arena: Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer treated spectators to a tennis masterclass, showcasing their immense talent and experience and enhancing the spectator experience by turning their Rolex Paris Masters semi-final into a memorable duel.

In the stands, two-time spectator Marie says, “The atmosphere is electric!” This is a great way to sum up the impression spectators have when they step into the venue. The minutes just before the match are like an opening act. As the players walk through the lit tunnel, the arena is plunged into darkness and music booms out. The spectators watch the players emerge from behind the scenes into the spotlight, focused on their imminent performance, and can share their idols’ emotions from the moment they leave the locker room.

One spectator sums up his experience for us, “You really feel like you’re at an American-style show.” The palpable excitement during the matches makes the audience feel like they are witnessing a real spectacle. Entertainment is made a priority in the visitor experience, as sport, particularly tennis, is something that should be experienced, not just watched, at the Rolex Paris Masters.

“You feel like you’re at a cross between a match and a concert,” enthuses another spectator, “With the musical interludes and the darkness between the games and sets.” Music also plays an important role in the spectator experience, and is a hallmark of the Parisian tournament’s identity. At most tennis competitions, the players’ rest breaks are silent, which gives the spectators the opportunity to move around, but at the Rolex Paris Masters, music is played during these pauses to maintain the tournament’s special atmosphere.

You feel closer to the players

Another tennis fan adds, “The fact that it is indoors makes you feel closer to the players, you can almost feel their hearts beating, and the arena acts like a sound box.” The players and audience are focused on the match and silence envelops the arena, leaving only the sound of balls hitting racquets, trainers squeaking on the floor, and the faint hum of the air conditioning.

The spectators at the Rolex Paris Masters quiver with every stroke played, with every bounce of the ball, with every cry of jubilation or masterful shot. The atmosphere is heightened because no outside noises can be heard during the match. That’s the “indoor” effect of the Rolex Paris Masters!
