Despite the backing of a passionate home crowd, French No.1 Arthur Fils was outplayed by Taylor Fritz in the opening match of the evening session.

Taylor Fritz's milestone victory was a memorable one.

The American recorded the 100th Masters 1000 win of his career in style, overwhelming world No.7 Arthur Fils to not only extinguish the hopes of the local favourite but also gradually silence the fervour inside the Plenitude Arena (6-3, 6-4 in 1h11).

One break in each set proved sufficient for the 2024 US Open finalist, who was outstanding behind his serve throughout the encounter. Landing 77% of his first serves and firing 14 aces, Fritz never faced a single break point and dictated the few extended rallies thanks to the greater precision of his forehand.

Even an atmosphere almost entirely in favour of his opponent failed to unsettle him.

This may not have been Arthur Fils at his very best, but it was unquestionably a very high-level performance from Taylor Fritz, for whom the Rolex Paris Masters represents a final opportunity to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.

Following his dominant display, the world No.12 will now take on Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals and will have to raise his level even further.

The Spaniard leads their head-to-head series 6-1, but Fritz must reach the final in Paris to keep his Turin hopes alive. The stage is therefore set for what could be a fascinatingly balanced clash on Friday on centre court at the Plenitude Arena.
